[For Barrayar] Vorkosigan's District

artwork by
Located on the southern coast of Barrayar's north continent, Vorkosigan's District boasts fertile farmland set against a prominent mountain range. The Barrayaran day is 26.7 hours long, and daylight hours follow seasonal patterns similar to Earth -- shorter days during the winter, longer days during the summer. Like all of Barrayar, its terraforming is only partially complete, the green Earth-descended flora still mixed in among the native reddish vegetation, most of which is toxic to humans. The Dendarii mountains that dominate the southern coast of the district are steep and rocky and home to hidden cave networks that span the entire range. The vegetation is largely heavily forest with patchy areas of bare rock and scrub. Maple trees are common all around the district and are highly associated with House Vorkosigan, whose house insignia bears a maple leaf against the district's iconic mountains.
The disrict capital Vorkosigan Vashnoi is located on the windward side of the Dendarii mountains, about fifty kilometers north of the foothills. The city is under occupation by the Cetagandan forces, its citizens relegated to glorified ghettos while ghem soldiers patrol the streets and monitor for signs of communication with the resistance.
However, the Cetagandan military base is farther out from the city, only fifteen kilometers from the foothills, where the real battle zone is. The Barrayaran resistance is hidden in the thick forest of the Dendarii mountains, always ready to pack up and move should their location be discovered.
The windward side of the Dendarii sees heavier precipitation, particularly in the winter and spring, and temperatures typical of a temperate climate, although the winters are harsher up in the mountains. The hillfolk who make their village homes up in the Dendarii make up a considerable portion of Vorkosigan's District's population and, however backwards they may seem to be, are hardy enough to thrive in the mountains.
