General Count Piotr Vorkosigan The youngest General in the Emperor's army, and among the most loyal. Fierce, uncompromising, and at times ruthless, there's nothing he won't do to win this war.

Countess Olivia Vorkosigan Princess and Countess, well-practiced in the art of putting duty before personal desires. Practical, cool-headed, and values nothing more than Barrayar's freedom and her sister's innocence.

Princess Sonia Vorbarra Olivia's willful and chirpy, though at times lonely, younger sister. Expert prankster, master of pouting. She can start a rumor like nobody's business, especially when it's none of hers.

Negri A very quiet, very observant boy who recently turned up in camp, sent as a spy by Piotr's aide-de-camp, Captain Ezar Vorbarra.

General Zahal ghem-Zefyst The genteel, affable personification of Kate Beaton's nemesis comic and a decorated general. Doesn't have pictures of his children, but would show you if he did.

Lady Diya d'Zefyst Culled from the Navarr constellation to be married to Zahal, she now leads the genetics project in Vorkosigan's District. Demure, brilliant, but still harbors some longing for her old life among the haut.

Lieutenant Gail ghem-Estif The only son of a noted Cetagandan general stationed in Vorbarr Sultana. He suffers from an unusually serious case of empathy.

Doctor Amai ghem-Soren A precocious young geneticist on Diya's senior staff. She has her own visions of grandeur, and a potentially brilliant career before her.

Haut Sei Navarr The Handmaiden of the Star Crèche, and an old friend and crechemate of Diya's. Graceful, subtle, and shrewd, she represents the Dowager Empress's interests in the exotics and the Star Gate.
